In Honor of Mothers

May 8, 2022

Here’s to the moms and the mother figures in our lives, past and present! Motherhood can take a thousand different forms and there is no one-size fits all.

In the SEG ecosystem, we have ventures who are working to ensure that all types of mothers have the support they need throughout the journey. These ventures support mothers walking through pregnancy, birth, and sometimes loss, learning how to navigate postpartum, breastfeeding, and parenting, moving through parenting and working, creating communities, and raising the bar for more equitable maternal healthcare especially for Black and Brown mothers.

To raise a child, it takes a village, and these ventures understand exactly that. They are working to build a system that supports mothers and parents each step of the way.

Urban Perinatal Education Center

 “Where equity meets community”

The Urban Perinatal Education Center grew out of the inability to have a safe space reflective of the Black, Indigenous and People Of Color community in the perinatal and maternal health realm in our communities. They want to change the way people experience perinatal health, education and services.

They have an ongoing capital campaign to move from virtual support to a physical home base, provide an easy access clinic, and expand.

The dispersing of families means that many expecting parents lack the support network they need to thrive postpartum. Research points to the importance of supporting families as best we can to improve mental health outcomes for mothers and their children.
